Intu announces 4G partnership with WIG and EE

Intu has signed a partnership with WIG and EE to install networks to support 4G services in what is thought to be the first for UK shopping centres.

Starting in summer this year, intu Trafford Centre will offer its shoppers superfast mobile broadband as EE becomes the first operator to go live on a newly developed state of the art network, with the rest of intu’s centres to follow.

Trevor Pereira, commercial director at intu said: "Mobile shopping has risen by over 50 per cent compared to a year ago, but we know that shoppers can be put off and frustrated by slow speeds and lost connections. By offering our shoppers 4G we are further breaking down the division between online and offline shopping and giving our retailers a really exciting opportunity to engage with their shoppers, interacting with them at every level"

Scott Coates, CEO at Wireless Infrastructure Group said: “The network we have developed at intu Trafford Centre will enable EE to provide shoppers with a transformational mobile experience.  Working in partnership with intu we have built a single network that can support all mobile operators and are delighted to be launching it with EE to bring 4G mobile to shoppers.”

This news comes hot on the heels of intu's free WiFi roll out launch last week, debuting at intu Trafford Centre as part of its £8m digital infrastructure investment plan. Intu is the UK’s first landlord to commit to large scale investment in the installation of a fully owned fibre optic network for its shopping centres. This investment will give intu direct ownership of the fibre network, WiFi technology and subsequent data, enabling intu to guide the customer journey from beginning to end.
