intu Metrocentre, Gateshead
The iconic intu Metrocentre is Europe’s largest covered shopping and leisure centre, attracting visitors from across the north east and as far afield as Edinburgh
Since 2005, intu Metrocentre, just three miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, has been part of an ongoing £120 million investment programme. The UK’s first mega mall is a must-visit destination, meeting today’s shoppers’ increased expectations for a day-out, thanks to its blend of world-class shopping and dining.
Our refurbishments and improvements include the creation in 2014 of the popular Qube leisure area, which houses an array of modern eateries and an Odeon IMAX cinema.
More recently, in 2016, we further extended Qube to add 12 new restaurants, attracting top names and providing a link between two hotspot shopping areas full of big name stores.
In short, we’ve taken a very successful centre and made it even more successful to reflect today’s customers’ needs.

Through our unique intu insight and retailer research, we recognised that if intu Metrocentre were to attract more must-have restaurants, it needed more larger-sized units.
So we set about meeting the restaurant operators’ needs, remodelling, refurbishing and enlarging an area previously known as Mediterranean Village to create the right kind of space.
The result: £11 million invested and a bigger and better Qube with the hottest restaurants, many previously unrepresented at intu Metrocentre. Tenants include Barburrito, Byron, TGI Fridays, Thaikhun, Chiquito, Five Guys, Ask Italian, Coast to Coast and Bella Italia.
The continued investment by intu ensures that we will continue to deliver an outstanding shopping and dining experience to our customers at intu Metrocentre

A platinum investment
intu knows that customers want to shop for designer brands in a designer setting
With the opening in 2014 of Platinum Mall, intu has created an exclusive new aspirational retail experience at intu Metrocentre.
Aimed specifically at quality niche retailers, Platinum Mall has created a high-end shopping arena to meet the needs of intu Metrocentre’s more affluent customer.
As part of an ongoing £120 million investment programme since 2005, Platinum Mall continues intu’s commitment to creating the right environment in which top brands can flourish.
By creating the Platinum Mall, intu has strengthened the appeal of brands to customers by grouping similar high-end names together to create an environment that befits the products sold.

Our toughest critics
It’s a tough job but someone has to do it. Local children Esther Bennett, 9, and Logan Jackson Luke, 6, are intu Metrocentre’s heads of fun. They check the centre’s free events and facilities are in line with what children want, ensuring that intu Metrocentre continues to attract families.
