intu shortlisted for leading waste management practices

We are delighted to have been shortlisted at both the 2019 Sceptre and PFM Awards for our partnership with Don’t Waste UK.

The waste industry has been under the spotlight to improve the transparency of reported waste data by adopting a consistent interpretation of terminology and waste stream categorisation across suppliers.

At intu, we have been on our own 18-month journey to improve the robustness of our own data as we recognised we were in a position where our waste service providers were interpreting the treatment of waste differently, and often incorrectly, with our reported recycling rate actually being a combination of recycling and recovery rates.

Last year we introduced a new waste reporting and auditing system in partnership with Don’t Waste UK and we now have a transparent, accurate and consistent methodology for reporting our waste data across our portfolio.

Don’t Waste UK is delighted to be working with intu to implement its unique system across the portfolio. This is an industry-leading initiative providing independent waste data, advanced reporting and analytics, enabling focused and intelligent management of operational, environmental and cost improvements.

Now that we have an accurate benchmark of our performance, we are able to focus on proactive waste management and maximise opportunities to engage with our tenants to improve waste reuse and recycling for example through our award-winning Compost Café initiative.

We hope being shortlisted for our waste management practices will encourage other property companies to review their own waste data to ensure it is being reported consistently in line with best practice recommendations.
