Creating a more autism friendly world

Our centre’s are vibrant, bustling places but this October we’re dimming the lights and turning down the sound as we partner with The National Autistic Society to support Autism Hour – will you join us?

intu is an autism friendly company because we believe in serving the needs of all our customers. For our autistic customers, it isn’t just about physical access, it’s about creating an environment they can enjoy, providing customer service from staff who understand their needs and making them smile.

That’s why we’re supporting The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour campaign and calling all retailers, restauranteurs and leisure operators at intu centres to take part in 'Autism Hours' across our national portfolio.

These are just some of simple things we can do for one hour, to create a more autism friendly world:

  • Reducing noise of in store music and tannoy announcements
  • Dimming lights wherever possible
  • Sharing information about autism in advance with employees so they know what to expect from customers’ behaviour and how they might be able to help
  • Giving out information to customers about autism hour

Why get involved?

Research by the NAS found that shops are the places that would make the biggest difference to their lives of autistic people, if they were more autism friendly.

  • 75% of disabled people and their families have left a shop because of poor customer service, meaning retailers could be missing out on a share of £420 million a week
  • Increase customer loyalty – retailers that make provision for autistic and disabled customers enjoy higher repeat visits and customer loyalty
  • Supports social responsibility

So if you want to join us in making a difference by creating a time when autistic customers can shop and eat out in an environment that is less overpowering, then sign up today!
