Adding a touch of extra sparkle this Christmas

Rebecca Crofton, senior project manager at James Glancy Design

We know that shoppers love to visit shopping centres to take in the festive atmosphere and marvel at the display of twinkly lights and decorations. At James Glancy Design, we believe more is more when it comes to festive sparkle and we’re the secret force behind Christmas, being one of the UK’s leading specialist designers of seasonal decorations.

At James Glancy Design we are always seeking to push the boundaries in lighting design and this year at intu Lakeside we took the opportunity to create a jewel inspired concept that we felt would reflect the centre and its customers at their best. We used cutting edge LED technology and created six spectacular feature diamonds that are the centrepiece of the Christmas scheme.

Each diamond has been covered in over 5,000 individually controllable super bright LED’s, each capable of showing 16 million different colours! The diamonds are programmed in a virtual 3D environment where an almost infinite selection of patterns and colourways are recorded into a media server which can then be played back as a lighting show. You can then set the animation to your optimum schedule or trigger the show independently using an iPhone app.

The LED has also been created with optimum use for HD cameras.  Not only are the diamonds created using bespoke lighting, but they also rotate to provide a fantastic display for visitors.  Inspired by the idea of ‘retail theatre’ we wanted people to engage with the Christmas scheme on a truly interactive level.

intu centres welcome one million customers every day during the festive season so it’s important to intu that every shopping experience is a memorable one that encourages shoppers to return more often and stay for longer. Shopping today is all about the experience - especially so at this time of year, so it was important to us to give shoppers a festive experience and the opportunity to capture that perfect selfie moment or share videos which show the sparkling animation in full flow.
